Ecommerce SEO design: category pages that rank and sell

Ecommerce website SEO design is the category and product templates: crawlable links, a stable layout, and a path to payment that works on the phone Google indexes.

User experience and SEO are the same template

User experience and SEO meet in the HTML a shopper and a crawler both receive: the category name, the product links, the price, and the control that adds the item.

A growth marketer can separate decoration from this. Colour, type and photography support the brand. They do not replace a category URL, a unique heading, or a link that exists without waiting for a client-side render.

Mobile-first indexing means Google predominantly crawls and indexes the mobile version of the site. If the phone view hides the introduction, collapses product links, or delays the grid behind a heavy script, that is the version in the index.

What each ecommerce template is for

Each template has one SEO job and one sales job. Mixing them produces duplicate URLs and a checkout that tries to rank.

Category page optimisation, in order

A category page is optimised when it is the one URL for that product type, the products are real links, and extra filters do not multiply the index.

  1. Write a short introduction that names the product type and who it is for. Do not repeat the manufacturer’s paragraph on every category.
  2. Output product names as links in the HTML. Infinite scroll that never exposes a URL is a weaker path for crawlers and for a shopper who wants to share an item.
  3. Choose one canonical URL for the category. Point sorted and lightly filtered views at it, or noindex the combinations you do not want as landing pages.
  4. Give every image a reserved box. A grid that jumps as photos arrive is a CLS problem and a harder page to scan.
  5. Keep the add-to-cart control responsive. The published “good” INP threshold is 200 milliseconds or less at the 75th percentile.

Cart abandonment is a step, not a mood

Cart abandonment is the share of sessions that add a product and leave before payment. The levers are cost clarity, account friction and a stable mobile payment step.

A logical test: show delivery cost on the product page for half of mobile sessions, and only at the last step for the other half. Judge completed orders and refund contacts. Do not judge the test by time on page. A faster, clearer checkout can lower time on page and raise orders.

Core Web Vitals still apply on the cart. A payment button that moves when a trust badge loads is CLS. A pay press that waits on a third-party script is INP. Both happen at the moment the sale is decided.

Frequently asked questions

Does user experience affect organic rankings?

Yes, where the experience is also a crawl and quality signal. Google indexes the mobile HTML, measures Core Web Vitals in the field, and sees whether the page satisfies the query. A prettier desktop mockup that hides products behind script does not.

How should a category page be optimised?

Give it one indexable URL, a unique introduction that names the product type, crawlable links to products, and filters that do not create an infinite set of indexable combinations. Keep the product images in reserved boxes so the grid does not shift.

What reduces cart abandonment without a redesign of the brand?

Show delivery cost before the last step, allow a guest checkout, and keep the payment step stable on a phone. Measure completed orders and the INP of the pay control, not a generic engagement score.
